  • Conducting an assessment of risks and needs and how MRC volunteers can be involved in assisting your community
  • Considering the components of an MRC, which includes local groups you can work with, seeking out and screening volunteers, and setting up an organization to manage the group
  • Developing a rough plan with a mission statement, objectives, activities, organizational chart, budget and potential partners
  • Securing broad-based community support, from local government, corporations, community leaders and other professionals

Getting Started: A Guide for Local Leaders offers practical steps and an action checklist you can use to start working on a local unit.

Registering your MRC unit is another component of startup. This process permits your MRC to request technical assistance from the national program office, use of the MRC logo, and participation in National MRC conferences.

In Massachusetts, MRCs meet quarterly and talk by phone monthly to share ideas, experiences and information.

For more information about unit development, please contact Jennifer Frenette, Regional Technical Assistance Coordinator.
