For Peter and Judy Scarafile, volunteerism isn’t just good citizenship, it’s a call to action. For the past three years, the husband and wife duo have provided medical services to hundreds of people in their community. The Scarafiles joined the Cape Cod Medical Reserve Corps in 2003 after attending an information seminar in Hyannis. When asked why she decided to join the local MRC Judy said, “Like many others after September 11, I was concerned and wanted to do more. I saw the MRC as an opportunity to help people and use my medical training. This was the first volunteer organization I was aware of that needed pharmacists.”

The Scarafiles are both longtime practicing pharmacists. Peter began his career in 1974 and today works as a Pharmacy Operations Manager at the Cape Cod Hospital, where he has worked for 31 years. When volunteering for the local MRC, Peter is responsible for preparing doses for clinics, reviewing and prescribing medications, educating patients about certain medications, and helping with overall logistics. When asked why he decided to volunteer for the local MRC, Peter said, “I wanted to be involved in providing healthcare for Cape Cod.” When he is not volunteering for the MRC, Peter assists other local organizations, including the Hyannis Chamber of Commerce, Big Brothers / Big Sisters, and the JFK Hyannis Museum.

Judy also began her career as a pharmacist over 30 years ago, first working for a small retail store for 25 years and as a hospital pharmacist for 11 years. Judy currently works as a part-time pharmacist for the RHCI (Rehabilitation Hospital of the Cape and Islands), but her full-time job is in the field of college baseball. Judy is the president of the Cape Cod Baseball League, which is the premier collegiate summer league in the U.S.

Last summer, the husband and wife team were among the thousands of people who volunteered to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Judy recalls, “When the Katrina survivors arrived on Cape Cod my husband and I helped set up a pharmacy at the medical clinic at Camp Edwards in Bourne, MA, where we did a lot of patient counseling.” During that time, Judy was also responsible for staffing the phones and preparing schedules for physicians at the clinic.

Peter and Judy feel that helping victims of Hurricane Katrina was very rewarding and self-fulfilling. While on assignment in Louisiana, Judy worked as a pharmacist on a Mobile Medical Team. Judy recalls, “It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life and without the MRC I would not have had the opportunity. So I tip my hat and say thank you to the MRC.” The Scarafiles have been married for 32 years and currently reside in Barnstable Village. During their free time, they enjoy biking, hiking, traveling, and watching baseball.
