Trudy Cohen

For over fifty years, Brookline resident Trudy Cohen has worked tirelessly to improve the welfare of her community. She began her career in social work as a secretary and case aide worker in the social work department at Beth Israel Hospital after receiving a B.A. from Boston University in 1949. Following her undergraduate studies, Trudy remained dedicated and ambitious and continued her education at the Simmons School of Social Work, where she received a Master of Science degree. After graduation in 1952, she worked as a clinical social worker at various hospitals. Trudy returned to Beth Israel Hospital, where she served as the Assistant Director of Social Work Department for over 17 years and briefly was the Director. Trudy and her husband, Martin, later moved out of state to Arizona in 1976 and then to Florida in 1986, where she volunteered for several public health clinics and other clinics aiding migrant workers.

Trudy returned to Brookline, MA. in 1998 and is still very much involved in helping her community. When asked why she decided to volunteer at her local Medical Reserve Corps, Trudy said, "It has been my desire to assist where appropriate in community emergency situations." Today she is retired but continues to serve on two local agency boards, including the Brookline Council for the Aging. Many of Trudy's coworkers recognize her as being a hardworking and dedicated volunteer. "Trudy is an incredible volunteer for the Brookline MRC. She is always willing to help in any way that she can and participates in almost everything that we do. She is a wonderful person whom we are lucky to have as a volunteer," commented Dawn Sibor, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for the Town of Brookline.

When asked what advice she would offer to people thinking about volunteering for the MRC, Trudy said, "you'll receive more than you give and in the process you'll learn ways to assist in handling emergency situations in your community." She feels that she has learned a great deal from the presenters and others participating in the organization.

When she is not volunteering, Trudy enjoys traveling, reading, swimming, listening to music and attending various theatre productions. Volunteers like Trudy understand the role MRC units play in relief efforts across the country and therefore donate their skill and time to help those in need. For that reason, the Brookline MRC is proud to have volunteers like Trudy onboard.
